I just discovered this new website called Loku, which is essentially a guide to several cities, including Austin.

So far, they are still in beta testing with only a couple aspects of the website up and running (Top Stories and Food & Drink) but more to come.

Just from a quick glance though, this site looks promising. The layout is very engaging, with a stream of pictures and headlines about local events, deals and happenings. Just from this feature alone, you can already tell Loku is going to be hip.

They also have a restaurant guide unlike any other I’ve encountered. Instead of the typical “pricey” and “ethnic” etc. identifiers used to search for a new place to dine, they have categories such as local, foodie, hipster, flirty, swanky and worldly. Users are even able to adjust using meters how much of each category they want the restaurant or club to be. Further, the site determines how hipster or flirty a restaurant is by users rating each restaurant using this scale.

Mostly, I’m just excited I found this site. I literally only spent about five minutes touring the site before i HAD to post something about it. Keep in mind I may be editing this post to incorporate more information or adjust what I’ve reported, as the site itself is still a work in progress as well.

EDIT: About 15 seconds after I posted this, I realized I had received an email from the found of Loku after singing up with the website. Here’s what the email said which helped clarify what the site is about.

Thanks for joining the local movement with Loku! We’re glad to have you.

We help you answer the question: what do locals care about? On Loku.com, you can find the hidden hot spots, tap into the local buzz,
or discover new things to do. We help you avoid the tourist traps and the crowds – and we show you the real local scene.

As one of our early users, your feedback is invaluable to us. Check out the site and let us know what you think! Give us a shout at
community@loku.com – we’d love to hear from you.
